Okay, so this Halloween cocktail didn’t turn out as spooky as I had planned, but I think the point still comes across. And the point is it’s Halloween season, which I love because people get so creative with everything.
I haven’t made sangria many times, but I do like that you can kinda do whatever you want with it. I used Woodbridge Chardonnay and decided to stick with some seasonal fall fruits. Then I dropped some black cherry grenadine syrup in the bottom to give it a two-toned, Halloween twist!
I went with a potions and bottles theme for this sangria, mostly because I tend to think of sangria as a fun, but very adult cocktail. It’s wine, so it’s classy. But you can also add all the mix-ins you want. Some people add liqueurs, some add fruit juices, and some people add sparkling champagne or water. And then, of course, you stuff your glass full of fruit. Sangria is all about balance. 😉
So for this, I really wanted to use fresh, seasonal ingredients that pair well with chardonnay, which are apples and pears. If you ever need inspiration, you can look on the back of the bottle at the description. Usually the label will mention the flavors already in the wine, and you can go from there.
If you’re having a classy Halloween party, I think this sangria would be perfect! It’s light and crisp and full of autumn flavors. Plus it’s easy to mix together in a pitcher for a crowd. I’ve seen a ton of sangria recipes made with sweeter wines, but I really love Woodbridge chardonnay for this. I’ve already mentioned that it’s “crisp,” but that’s such a great word for fall, you know?
If you want to get a little more in the Halloween spirit, try serving it in test tube bottles! I got these at a local craft store in the party section. They’re plastic, not glass like real test tubes, but I like them because they’re flat on the bottom and can stand up on their own. Imagine these all lined up for your party guests!
- 1 cup black cherry juice
- 1 cup pomegranate juice
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 bottle Woodbridge Chardonnay
- 2 cups sparkling wine/champagne
- 1 cup apple juice
- 4-5 red delicious apples, thinly sliced
- 5-6 pears, thinly sliced
- fresh herbs for decor
- Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until mixture resembles a thin syrup. Let syrup cool completely before using.
- Combine chardonnay, sparkling wine, and apple juice in a pitcher. Fill glasses with apple and pear slices. Pour chardonnay mixture to cover. Slowly pour grenadine syrup down the inside of each glass and let it sink to the bottom. Garnish with herbs if desired
If you’ve never purchased Woodbridge chardonnay or their other wines, you totally should. And this is a great time to try them out because there are several demos that might be happening near you!
